Steve Dorval is a successful, growth-oriented leader and innovative thinker with proven experience building high-performing teams that deliver mission critical business results. Skilled at conceiving and articulating a compelling vision of new businesses and products to employees, investors, and senior executives. Steve is known to be passionate about leveraging cutting edge technology and changing consumer preferences to radically improve access to the financial services industry and to revolutionize existing customer experiences to deliver better outcomes. He has demonstrated success recruiting, developing, and retaining top tier-talent in both in startup and large company environments.
Steve is the founder and principal of The Dorval Advisory Group, consulting with startups to enhance their ability to close Tier 1 financial services company sales. Based on his own experience and through original research with key innovation, product and partnerships leaders at major organizations Steve understands what startup sales leaders need to know to grow their business. He will take you inside the boardroom where decisions are made to display the culture, process and incentives that lead to completed deals.
At John Hancock, Steve was President of John Hancock Personal Financial Services LLC and Head of Advice and Innovation. In that role, he was responsible for leading the strategic effort to leverage emerging digital services to enhance John Hancock’s ability to deliver investment advice and financial planning to customers. Simultaneously, Steve built and launched two startup businesses for Hancock (Twine and COIN) serving as CEO for Twine. These two digital advice products, or robo-advisors, focus on complex integrations with leading aggregation and clearing APIs to enable real-time money movement, automated portfolio management and intelligent financial guidance, for advisors and for retirement rollovers.
Steve spent more than 16 years at New York Life participating in all aspects of the retirement industry. Across various senior roles, he led the development of new businesses and products for the bundled retirement and investment only businesses. This includes building a $10+ billion stable value business and $1 billion+ investment consulting business (partnered with Morningstar) and leading managed account products with over $500 million in AUM. His experience spanned strategy, investments, operations, distribution and marketing.
Earlier in his career, Steve built a solid foundation on which his successful career was launched, as he worked at Dewey Square Investors as an operations and quantitative analysist and prior to that at State Street Bank where he served as a portfolio accountant. He began his career at the U.S. Department of Labor working as a Compliance Officer.
